The 2024 IGLTA Global LGBTQ Travel Convention in Osaka, Japan, was nothing short of extraordinary. Being part of the largest convention in IGLTA’s history outside North America—and the most globally diverse one ever—filled me with pride and excitement. With attendees from over 50 countries, the event underscored the Asia-Pacific region as a vibrant, rapidly growing market for LGBTQ+ travel. The Osaka Convention & Tourism Bureau (OCTB) played a crucial role in making this groundbreaking event happen, and their warm, inclusive approach truly set the tone for an unforgettable experience.
From the moment I arrived, I was struck by Osaka’s welcoming atmosphere. “Travel Osaka with Pride” billboards and signs greeted us across the city, reflecting the destination’s commitment to inclusivity and LGBTQ+ visibility. It was inspiring to see how Osaka embraced the convention and its attendees, showcasing the city as a beacon for diverse travellers.
The event kicked off with the Buyer/Supplier Marketplace, a bustling hub of activity where I met with 50 suppliers eager to share how their services can create memorable travel experiences for my clients. This was followed by an incredible opening reception at Landmark Square Osaka, a venue with breathtaking views of Osaka Castle. The energy in the room was electric as attendees reconnected with old friends, made new connections, and celebrated the shared mission of advancing LGBTQ+ travel.
The convention’s opening session set an inspiring tone, with IGLTA President and CEO John Tanzella and Board Chair Dougal McKenzie presenting the organization’s ambitious 2030 Strategic Vision. Their mission—“to enable authentic travel that enriches lives and connects the LGBTQ+ community and industry”—resonated deeply with me. Their focus on championing underrepresented communities, advancing LGBTQ+ destinations, and leveraging research and education to drive change left me feeling motivated and hopeful.
One of the highlights for me was the fireside chat between Brian Beall, Director of the U.S. National Travel and Tourism Office, and Hiroshi Mizohata, President of OCTB. Their dialogue offered valuable insights into how destinations can become safer and more inclusive for LGBTQ+ visitors. Another standout moment was Lisa Lam’s powerful presentation on hosting the Gay Games 11 in Hong Kong—a historic achievement that highlighted the challenges and triumphs of fostering LGBTQ+ inclusion in Asia.
Outside the sessions, I had the opportunity to explore Osaka and Kyoto, and these experiences brought the destinations to life. In Osaka, I attended Opulence, Japan’s premier drag event, which featured RuPaul’s Drag Race royalty like Jaida Essence Hall, the fierce Nymphia Wind and Asia's hottest queen - Precious Paula Nicole alongside local stars like Velma Belle. The show was a dazzling celebration of artistry and talent, a true testament to Japan’s growing drag scene. I also enjoyed a walking night tour of Osaka, where we ate and drank our way through the city’s lively streets, guided by a host who shared fascinating stories and insights.
In Kyoto, I immersed myself in the city’s rich culture, visiting the iconic Kiyomizu-dera Temple and Nijo Castle. Traveling between Osaka and Kyoto on the Shinkansen was seamless—a reminder of how efficient and traveler-friendly Japan is.
This convention wasn’t just about learning; it was about connecting—connecting with suppliers, fellow travel buyers, and media professionals. Sharing ideas, tackling challenges, and discovering new tools to enhance our work made this experience invaluable. I left feeling energized and deeply inspired to continue championing LGBTQ+ travel.
I can’t wait to attend the 2025 IGLTA Global Convention in Palm Springs, California. If Osaka was any indication, the future of LGBTQ+ travel is brighter than ever. Join me in celebrating this progress and making an impact in a community that thrives on the power of travel to open hearts and minds.
